Chrome DevTools: audit an affiliate link

An affiliate link can open an attractive page while losing the context needed for attribution. The reverse is also possible: the address becomes shorter because the advertiser has already stored the identifier. Looking at the address bar alone cannot settle the question. A publisher needs a reproducible record of the journey, a clearly identified discrepancy and a separate reconciliation of the agreed business outcome.

This guide produces three practical deliverables: a link brief, a browser evidence record and a decision on a bounded pilot. Both scenarios are fictional teaching exercises, not customer results. Amounts are independent assumptions in USD, not Chrome or AffiliateCore prices. The technical exercise is useful without registration. Any commercial placement still requires permission for the particular product, traffic source and market.

Define what the browser can actually prove

Separate four events: somebody clicks; the browser reaches the intended landing page; the advertiser receives the agreed action; that action is accepted under the programme rules. Browser inspection mainly addresses the first two. A successful HTTP response, a thank-you message or a cookie does not establish payable commission. Server-to-server reporting normally happens outside the visitor's Network panel.

On our platform, AffiliateCore, an available campaign link can be the starting point: useful content → campaign link → advertiser landing page → agreed action → acceptance review. Check the offer you actually have access to. Neither course nor software examples below imply that such an offer is available. A direct affiliate programme is another workable setting when it documents identifiers, permissions and reconciliation responsibilities.

Agree the boundary of the exercise. Inspect your own material and an authorised journey; do not modify someone else's integration. Never submit invented leads, buy through your own referral to manufacture commission or replay payment requests from Console. If conversion testing is necessary, arrange a separate non-billable procedure with the integration owner. This guide assumes no universal test button or permission to create production events.

Prepare a link brief before opening tools

Record the date, time zone, Chrome version, device, actual connection country, source material and expected destination. Add the permitted source, accessible campaign, qualifying action, review period and technical contact. Missing information is a reason to prepare and clarify, not to purchase traffic on the assumption that everything will work.

Use this brief: “Run L01; material: course comparison; placement: after the timetable section; destination: selected course; source: owned article; link version: v1; expected labels: source/article/footer; observation: blank; owner: journey maintainer; decision: pending.” Labels should describe placements rather than people. Do not put names, email addresses, phone numbers or lead details into a URL.

Privately preserve the issued link and compare it with the address actually embedded in the published material. A content editor, link wrapper or shortening service may change it. Pasting the correct address into a browser does not test the published button. If the link opens a new tab, prepare recording in that context; the original tab's log does not guarantee capture of the new tab's navigation.

Change one condition at a time. An ordinary profile and an isolated test profile are different experiments. Incognito is not a perfect representation of every first-time visitor. Avoid clearing a working account's cookies merely to obtain a cleaner result. Record the real consent choice, and do not fabricate consent by editing storage.

If you are preparing your first arrangement, create an AffiliateCore publisher profile and document your source. Suitable offers and source eligibility must be checked separately. Registration itself does not make the campaign ready to run.

Capture the journey before the click

Open DevTools, choose Network, enable Preserve log and check that recording is active. Clear old entries and perform one navigation. These controls are documented in the Chrome Network tutorial. Opening the tools after arrival can miss the start; an incomplete trace cannot prove that no redirect occurred.

Begin with document requests, then remove filters when related requests need inspection. Open the relevant row's Headers and note the request address, method, status and any response Location. Inspect parameters in Payload. English labels help match the documentation, although placement and translations can vary by Chrome version. There is no general-purpose verdict that declares an affiliate link commercially valid.

Make a compact journey record: “Step one: source domain, deliberate click. Step two: tracking domain, observed status and destination. Step three: advertiser domain, product and language.” This is an illustrative reporting format, not an interface screenshot. Keep complete private addresses separately and use agreed pseudonyms in discussions.

For a second diagnostic pass, you may use Disable cache and record that change. This does not reset the entire profile, consent or server-side state. Comparing a warm repeat visit with a cold visit is not evidence of a performance improvement. Restore ordinary conditions after the experiment and verify the real journey again.

Read redirects and parameters carefully

HTTP redirect codes do not all have identical semantics. Do not change them yourself to “improve tracking”. Establish the sequence and destination first. MDN distinguishes HTTP, HTML and JavaScript redirects; a document returning 200 may subsequently navigate elsewhere through client code. Inspect Initiator and visible behaviour when the chain is unclear.

Compare parameter names and values at each relevant boundary. Use the labels documented for your actual campaign, not names borrowed from another network. Current AffiliateCore project code includes sub1, sub2 and sub3, but verify your particular route and integration agreement. A utm_source value is not automatically the conversion identifier. Mark mandatory fields in the brief so reviewers know which differences matter.

Look for duplicate keys, empty values, unexpected whitespace and repeated encoding. A value containing %2520 can suggest repeated encoding, but is not a diagnosis by itself. Compare source and decoded representations rather than manually altering a signed URL. Simple placement labels such as article_a and button_b are easier to reconcile and reveal no personal details.

The portion after # is a fragment, not part of the server's HTTP request, although client code can read it. Putting an identifier there is not equivalent to a query parameter; see MDN's fragment reference. Conversely, an identifier disappearing from the visible address does not prove loss. Ask whether it was stored earlier and request authorised event reconciliation.

Separate failures, restrictions and business decisions

A 404 calls for checking the address and whether the route remains valid. A 403 calls for asking its owner why access was refused. A 5xx needs the precise request and time for technical investigation. Record a redirect loop as a sequence, not merely “slow website”. A cancelled request, missing HTTP response and server error are distinct observations. Preserve the actual message without assigning blame based on a red row.

A CORS error on a script request does not automatically mean an ordinary link navigation failed. Identify the resource and the user action affected; MDN explains the scope of CORS. Do not disable browser protections or ask visitors to remove safeguards. The repaired journey must work under normal supported conditions.

For cookies, inspect Application → Storage → Cookies and the selected origin. Use Issues to investigate relevant warnings. The official cookie guide and Issues guide explain these tools. Missing one cookie does not establish missing server-side attribution. Editing values until the test succeeds would invalidate the observation.

Check the intended product, readable offer and return navigation on a narrow screen. Device Mode is an approximation, not a real phone, as the Chrome documentation states. Emulated geolocation does not automatically change the connection's IP country. Respect regional restrictions and clarify eligibility rather than attempting to bypass a refusal.

Worked scenario one: a course article and bounded continuation

A publisher creates a comparison of spreadsheet training formats. Materials include an original article, selection criteria, an affiliate disclosure, a “Check the syllabus and timetable” prompt, an authorised link and brief L01. Readers understand that they are going to an advertiser rather than downloading a free file. The hypothetical programme permits this source and pays for accepted consultation requests; no matching AffiliateCore inventory is implied.

Before placement, the team compares the issued link with its published version. In this fictional observation, a tracking redirect reaches the selected course and the agreed label survives the required boundary. The ordinary profile and a real phone display the intended offer. Technical checks create no leads. Their clicks are identified separately and excluded from the commercial cohort. The responsible owner explains how genuine eligible enquiries will later be reconciled.

The pilot allows seven days of acquisition, a USD 600 total limit, then the agreed period for final decisions. Costs are USD 360 for placement, USD 80 for content, four hours of checking at USD 25 for USD 100, and USD 60 allocated to tools and administration. Total cost is USD 600. These are all costs in this teaching model; applicable taxes must be added before a real investment decision.

There are 600 commercial clicks and 40 unique recorded enquiries. Six fail acceptance criteria, four are subsequently cancelled, and 30 remain accepted with none pending. The responsible business party supplies reasons; DevTools does not. At an assumed USD 30 per accepted outcome, revenue is USD 900. The contribution after listed costs is USD 300, and return on those costs is 50%. This is not an earnings forecast.

Full cost per accepted enquiry is 600 / 30 = USD 20. Revenue per commercial click is 900 / 600 = USD 1.50, against full click cost of USD 1. Break-even at the same cost requires 20 accepted outcomes. Acceptance is 30 / 40 = 75%; rejection and cancellation combined are 25%. Do not label all of that combined share as refunds, because the reasons differ.

The decision is a second bounded cohort, not immediate unlimited expansion. The editorial rule is to increase the limit by at most 20% only after two comparable closed cohorts show positive contribution, at least 70% acceptance and no unresolved technical discrepancies. One successful cohort only permits repetition. Stop acquisition when a mandatory identifier is lost, the wrong product appears or the cost limit is reached. Already incurred costs remain in the report.

Worked scenario two: a software link and a stop decision

The second material helps a small team organise tasks. It includes an honest feature comparison, an image of the publisher's own template, “View the service terms”, a separately versioned link and brief L02. The hypothetical programme permits this source and counts qualified demonstration requests. Nothing promises free access, automatic approval or an existing external-service integration with AffiliateCore.

The preliminary check used the direct address, but the published material contains another redirect. In the fictional trace, that wrapper sends visitors to a general language section and drops a required parameter before the advertiser's agreed storage point. The publisher compares both traces and reports the first discrepancy to the wrapper owner. They neither substitute someone else's identifier nor demand that every click be credited as a lead.

The defect affects one placement variant, not every journey in the cohort. The enquiries counted below have already been reconciled by the responsible party through working routes; unmatched events contribute no revenue. The faulty variant’s separate contribution to losses remains unknown.

At the stop point, placement has cost USD 420, content USD 120, checking USD 100 and tools plus administration USD 60: USD 700 total. There are 500 commercial clicks and 40 enquiries. Ten are rejected, six cancelled and 24 finally accepted; none remain pending. With USD 25 per accepted outcome, revenue is USD 600 and contribution is minus USD 100. Return on cost is approximately minus 14.29%.

Cost per accepted enquiry is 700 / 24 ≈ USD 29.17. Revenue per click is USD 1.20 versus USD 1.40 full cost. Break-even requires 28 accepted enquiries, four more at unchanged costs and rates. That is an arithmetic threshold, not a prediction that repairing the link will recover four outcomes. The combined non-accepted share is 16 / 40 = 40%. The browser defect does not prove the cause of every rejection or cancellation.

Stop spending, have the responsible party repair the route, then retest the actual published placement. Any authorised restart has its own budget and cohort identifier; the earlier loss remains. Expansion requires two closed repaired cohorts with positive contribution, at least 70% acceptance and reproducibly correct navigation. Do not mix good days on the new version with bad days on the old version to hide the difference.

Hand over evidence and close the audit

A useful defect card states expectation, observation, reproduction steps, time, profile conditions, first divergent boundary and repair owner. For example: “L02 v1; expected demonstration page; second redirect reaches the general section; mandatory parameter missing before storage; owner confirms; spending paused.” Where confirmation is absent, write “hypothesis requiring investigation” instead. The distinction keeps an observation from becoming an unsupported accusation.

If a HAR is required, export the sanitized form and still inspect URLs, query strings, request bodies and responses yourself. Removing selected sensitive headers does not guarantee removal of personal information. Share the minimum permitted extract privately, not a full session through a public validator. The Network reference documents export options. Set recipients and retention before collecting more evidence than necessary.

Final checklist: published link matches the brief; capture started before the click; domains and product are expected; mandatory parameters were checked; technical faults are separate from acceptance decisions; the mobile route was checked independently; outcomes are closed; all costs and cancellations are counted; stop rules were respected. Preserve before and after records. “Fixed” requires a fresh observation rather than a developer's assurance alone.

Existing partners can sign in to AffiliateCore, compare the brief with their available campaign and prepare a specific question about the disputed step. Without a suitable campaign, retain the source description and material for later assessment. Never send support full cookies, credentials or unrelated applicants' data.

Sources and the next practical exercise

The linked Chrome and MDN documentation was checked on 22 October 2026. It supports browser behaviour and web-navigation facts. Budgets, the 70% threshold, two-cohort rule and 20% step are editorial teaching assumptions, not official Chrome or AffiliateCore requirements. Actual commercial conditions come from the relevant programme.

Continue with the clicks-without-conversions funnel audit and mobile PageSpeed priorities. This article has a narrower purpose: reproducible evidence about the link itself. Your assignment is to complete one brief, obtain one authorised trace, distinguish a confirmed cause from a hypothesis and name the owner of the next action.
