In-house affiliate program or CPA network: what should advertisers choose?

Choose an affiliate setup around your team's resources and control requirements, not just its commission rate. An in-house program and a CPA network address similar needs but distribute the work differently.

What your team must handle

An in-house program requires partner recruitment, agreements, support, tracking, event reconciliation and payouts. Buying software reduces development work; it does not replace these processes. Assign owners for integration, publisher relationships and disputed rewards.

A network may handle some of this work. Ask which services the fee includes, who resolves disputed conversions and how to export data. Joining a network does not itself guarantee traffic volume or quality.

Compare the complete cost

Include software, integration, staff time, publisher rewards, network fees and transfer charges. Plan separately for cash needed during holds and agreed payout cycles.

Illustrative example, not an AffiliateCore tariff: $5,000 in publisher rewards plus a 10% network markup totals $5,500 before other costs. An in-house program with $800 in operating costs totals $5,800 for the same rewards. Different volumes or service coverage can reverse that comparison.

Control matters more than a feature list

Before launch, check event exports, click ID transmission, duplicate handling, staff permissions and adjustment history. Agree in writing on payable events, permitted sources and rejection reasons. A polished report is no substitute for reconciling an individual transaction.

Making the decision

An in-house program may suit an established partner team that needs deep integration. Consider a network when organizing partner operations sooner is the priority. Run a limited pilot: one offer, a clear spending cap, a test conversion and reconciliation before scaling.

Next: preparing an affiliate program.
