Cloudflare coalesce(): test rules with missing data

Confirmed update

On 1 October 2026, Cloudflare announced coalesce(), which selects the first argument that is not nil. Both announcement and event are dated 1 October; this review is dated 6 October.

Region: global Cloudflare documentation. Audience: publishers and advertiser engineering teams operating their own sites. This is a third-party service feature, not a new AffiliateCore capability.

Editorial implication

A fallback deserves as much testing as the primary value. In request-handling rules, an unexpected substitution can conceal a missing parameter. A newly available function is not, by itself, a reason to rewrite a working configuration immediately.

Choose one rule where a missing value genuinely prevents predictable handling. Write down the expected outcome before changing it. Never use a fallback to invent an acquisition source, user consent or a confirmed event.

Checks before adoption

  • Prepare four sample requests: valid value, absent parameter, empty string and unexpected value. Do not assume absence and an empty string behave identically.
  • Record expected action and actual response for each request. Separately confirm the intended destination remains reachable.
  • Check function availability for the particular rule type and plan. Do not transplant an example expression into another context blindly.
  • Save the previous rule version and rollback method. Begin in a safe test context.

Readiness means all four scenarios produce the expected results and missing data remains distinguishable in available diagnostics. If substitution makes an erroneous request look successful, reconsider the rule. This is an editorial testing procedure, not a guarantee of compatibility or better conversion rates.
