Traffic sources for Russia: where visitors come from and how to assess results

Geography: Russia. Reviewed on 11 October 2026. Examples concern ordinary services and software products. International platforms are included for comparison: appearing on this map does not mean that advertising in Russia is available.

What counts as a source

A source is the place and mechanism of first contact: a search result, a creator's post, an advertising placement or a directory listing. A format describes presentation: video, banner, notification or text. Metrica and Search Console help investigate and measure traffic; they are not sources themselves. A prelanding page and a quiz are intermediate steps, not independent audiences. Retargeting uses previously observed contacts and requires separate accounting for overlap.

A publisher needs a route: source → useful promise → owned content or landing page → permitted offer → confirmed action. An advertiser checks in reverse, tracing an accepted lead back to the contact point, placement conditions and expenditure. The intermediary selling clicks is not necessarily the website where the person saw the message.

Start with a specific product, service territory and outcome. Educational example: a demonstration of inventory software for a small shop. A qualified lead is a demonstration request from an eligible business with a valid contact method, assessed against criteria agreed before launch. Neither a video view nor an arbitrary telephone number is that outcome.

Prepare a source worksheet and register as an AffiliateCore publisher to compare it with the terms of offers available to you. Offer suitability and permission to use the source must be checked separately.

1. Organic search and SEO

The visitor actively asks a question. “How to manage stock” and “inventory software for a shop” describe different tasks, even when they eventually lead to the same product. The first needs an explanation with an example; the second needs a comparison of requirements and suitable solutions. The page must deliver its promise without requiring registration.

The working sequence is: collect questions → group them by task → create useful pages → check indexing → measure visits and relevant actions. Treat Yandex and Google separately because their reports and available features differ. Track impressions, clicks, progression to relevant content and confirmed outcomes. Include editing and development time: organic traffic is not costless simply because there is no click charge.

2. Paid search

Search context can connect an advertisement with a specific need. Buying a click does not establish qualification: the person may want instructions, employment, a free option or support for something already purchased. Decide which intentions the landing page actually serves before buying traffic.

For an eligible first test, prepare a small group of closely related queries, a matching advertisement, one page and a stopping rule. Do not combine brand protection, generic demand and competitor queries into a single average cost. Check rights and platform rules before using another company's brand.

Do not budget Google Ads as an available Russian channel: Google states that advertising from Russia-based advertisers is paused. Google policy. Microsoft Advertising, Meta and TikTok are international comparisons here, with suitability for your Russian scenario unconfirmed. Verify country eligibility, contractual terms and rules before allocating money. Microsoft's historical suspension notice is not current product-specific eligibility evidence. Microsoft's March 2022 notice.

3. Yandex Advertising Network and other website networks

The person is generally consuming something else rather than searching for your product at that moment. Explain the benefit without imitating a system message or disguising the advertisement as editorial content. The advertisement, destination and product must retain the same meaning.

A network is a buying mechanism; actual contact happens on particular websites and placements. Request available placement detail, separate devices and inventory, and investigate accidental clicks and event quality. High click-through rates can accompany poor leads. Exclude a placement using comparable observation and defined criteria, not one disappointing click. See the official network documentation; our assessment procedure does not establish access to every placement.

4. VK Ads and the social feed

The visitor encounters a proposal among other posts. Examine context as well as audience: why would they stop, what question does the content answer and what follows the click? An embedded lead form and an external website are different routes with different losses.

To compare them, align the promise, lead definition, processing window and deduplication rules in advance. Measure contactable, accepted and cancelled leads as well as submitted forms. Easy submission does not demonstrate readiness to discuss the product. Avoid collecting unnecessary information merely to make qualification appear stricter.

5. Odnoklassniki and Mail.ru products

An ecosystem name does not identify the placement. An advertisement in a service, a community post and a video can create different kinds of contact. Record the exact product, buying method, format, geography and available reporting on the test worksheet.

Do not automatically apply a historical advertising-system name to current products. Verify the operating interface and official inventory description before following a dedicated setup guide. Assess the actual placement, not a generic “Mail.ru” label supplied by an intermediary.

6. Telegram: three separate routes

The first route is a direct placement bought from a channel owner. Topic, posting history, view dynamics, removal conditions and clear advertising disclosure matter. The second is an owned channel: regular useful content, voluntary subscriptions, retention and relevant onward links. The third is the official advertising platform, subject to its current rules for the intended scenario.

Do not collapse these routes into one subscriber acquisition price. Agree the date, copy, link and available statistics for a purchased post. Include production effort and unsubscribes for an owned channel. Audience anomalies warrant investigation, not an automatic accusation of fake followers. Unsolicited private messages and hidden group additions are not substitutes for placements.

Telegram Ads rules require matching destinations and prohibit cloaking. Direct placements require their own assessment of terms and applicable requirements.

7. Dzen and useful long-form content

The task is to answer a question before introducing the product. For example, explain how to identify stock discrepancies and supply a usable checklist. If the headline promises a method, provide that method in the article; a registration form must not replace it.

Separate reading, onward visits and confirmed outcomes in measurement. Compare topics by depth of interest and subsequent action while counting production time. A dedicated guide needs verified placement options, example headlines, an article structure and a check that the landing page preserves context.

8. Video: VK Video, Clips, YouTube and TikTok

Watching usually requires less intent than clicking or submitting a lead. A video should solve one problem and offer a clear next step. Educational scenario: show an inventory mistake, its consequence and a way to check it; link to a page continuing the same example.

Each platform needs its own guide. Organic publishing, creator sponsorship and paid advertising are not interchangeable. Check country, format, outbound-link and product eligibility before launch. Report retention, available click measurements and subsequent actions. Views and outcomes from unrelated reports cannot be converted into a sequential conversion rate.

9. Avito and classified listings

Visitors often compare concrete offers and expect clear terms. Describe a service that can actually be delivered, including territory, price or pricing method, timing and limitations. An intermediary must not pretend to be the service provider or fabricate availability.

First verify category and affiliate-model eligibility. Then distinguish new enquiries, repeat contacts, duplicates and qualified leads. For services, response speed and ability to fulfil the request may matter more than listing views. A dedicated guide must cover the whole route from listing to enquiry handling.

10. Maps, Yandex Business and 2GIS

The main context is local demand. People compare location, opening hours, services and listing credibility. This is a route for genuine businesses, not invented branches created to cover more cities.

Check listing accuracy, contact options and service territory. A directions request, a telephone-button click and an actual enquiry are different events. Without call tracking, do not label every click a lead. Record listing edits and paid placements separately instead of attributing all existing demand to them. References: Yandex Business and 2GIS help. Neither establishes eligibility for a particular offer.

11. Creators, communities and direct placements

The value may be trust in a creator and precise audience context. Read the questions people discuss and observe how commercial proposals are received. Agree the format, commercial disclosure, material rights, placement duration and available statistics.

Use a concrete demonstration relevant to that audience, not a universal advertisement. Never invent the creator's endorsement. Placement price is only part of the cost: preparation, approval and handling enquiries count too. Compare placement quality and fulfilment, not just subscriber totals.

12. Directories, reviews, forums and answers

A visitor may already be choosing a solution or seeking help. The contribution should answer the question and follow the site's rules. Disclosing a commercial relationship matters more than disguising an advertisement as an independent recommendation.

Distinguish an owned useful review, a paid directory listing and participation in a discussion. Repeated identical answers, borrowed accounts and fabricated recommendations do not form a sustainable content strategy. Consider moderation, how long a contribution remains visible and whether product information can be updated.

13. Email and owned notifications

A voluntary subscriber list is an asset with documented provenance. Record what people subscribed to, what was promised and how they can withdraw. A useful sequence explains the problem while clearly identifying commercial proposals.

Measure delivery, unsubscribes, complaints and confirmed actions alongside opens and clicks. Purchasing an address list does not establish consent to receive your messages. Check each channel's rules and applicable requirements separately; “the details were public” is not a sufficient basis.

14. Push and in-page push

These labels do not describe the same mechanism. Establish whether the person requested notifications, who collected the subscription, where the message appears and how receipt stops. A notification-like block inside a page does not prove browser notification consent.

Request inventory detail, frequency information and device breakdowns. Compare accidental clicks and meaningful subsequent actions. Never imitate system warnings or conceal the commercial nature of a message. Low-priced clicks alone do not establish quality; verify that the promise and destination remain aligned.

15. Popunder, clickunder and interstitial

An additional window or an intermediate display interrupts an existing journey. Establish what triggers it, what the user expects, how it can be dismissed and whether that placement is permitted. A page opening is not proof of intentional interest.

Before any eligible test, check the actual placement and dismissal behaviour. Do not use hidden redirects or browser-security workarounds. Separate opens from deliberate navigation and accepted enquiries. If the delivery mechanism cannot be explained or inspected, exclude it from the test rather than assigning it an optimistic conversion estimate.

16. Teaser and native networks

The first message encourages continued reading. Its promise must survive on the destination page, with advertising identifiable. Fake news, fabricated celebrity recommendations and unsupported health claims cannot be treated as creative testing variations.

Compare lead quality after full disclosure, not just click-through rate. Request available placement reports and investigate unusual concentrations of events. A cheap visit does not prove profitability, and an expensive one does not prove quality.

17. Incentives, cashback and partner intermediaries

A reward changes the reason for acting. The advertiser must explicitly accept the particular incentive and define the independently useful outcome. Cashback after a genuine purchase is different from paying for a fictitious registration to generate affiliate commission.

Require a transparent traffic provenance chain from intermediaries. Renaming purchased traffic “our audience” does not make it a new channel. Check agreements, traceability to placements and the limits of available attribution.

18. What the analysis of grey schemes covers

Cloaking, source misrepresentation, cookie stuffing, fake leads, inflated events, spam, adware and deceptive contact resale deserve separate analysis: which claim is falsified, who loses money or control, which observations justify suspicion and what further evidence is needed. A signal is not a proven violation.

The advertiser's practical response is clear permissions, proportionate diagnostic evidence, review of disputed events, a partner's opportunity to respond and understandable decision reasons. This is analysis and protection, not a guide to building deceptive schemes or bypassing checks. Evaluate mechanisms and consequences rather than relying on the ambiguous label “grey”.

Choose a first source and calculate the test

Exclude routes forbidden by the product, platform or country rules. Choose two sources for which you have materials, time and outcome measurement. Launching the whole map together makes changes hard to explain.

Monetary teaching examples in this edition use US dollars (USD). Figures are independent illustrative assumptions, not currency conversions or market rates. Actual transaction currencies depend on platform and offer terms.

Educational calculation: placement costs USD 8,000, content production USD 3,000 and enquiry handling USD 1,000. Total cost is USD 12,000. Of 30 new enquiries, 12 meet the agreed criteria. Cost per accepted lead is USD 1,000; cost per enquiry is USD 400. These are distinct metrics, not customer results. If two accepted leads are subsequently cancelled, the unchanged cost divided by ten final outcomes is USD 1,200.

Define the observation window, duplicate rules, processing deadline and stopping condition before launch. Pending leads are not rejected leads. Review delays are not payout timing. When events cannot be linked, report separate metrics and their limitations rather than inventing a continuous funnel.

Complete one route worksheet: placement, task-based audience, promise, material, destination, outcome, restrictions, full cost and decision rule. Compare it with the conditions of a suitable available AffiliateCore offer. The map remains useful without registration; neither an appropriate offer nor source acceptance can be promised.

Worksheet and two educational routes

A shop chooses inventory software. First material: Requirements comparison and demonstration. Outcome to verify: Confirmed request from a suitable shop.

A local service seeks work. First material: Accurate service listing and territory. Outcome to verify: An enquiry the provider can fulfil.

A reader investigates a problem. First material: Open explanation with an example. Outcome to verify: Progression to content about a specific need.

Educational route 1: stock question → worked instruction → software comparison → voluntary demonstration request. Only require comparison when the visitor is still choosing; someone ready for a demonstration should not be forced through every step.

Educational route 2: local repair listing → relevant work description → call or form → territory and task confirmation. Before buying reach, establish that the provider can respond and deliver. These are route designs, not client results.

Use your AffiliateCore publisher account to compare country, source and outcome with a suitable available offer's conditions. Do not upload other people's contacts or create payable fictitious test conversions.

Before spending

  1. Identify the exact placement, buying method and real audience supplier.
  2. Check geography, category, offer conditions and creative requirements.
  3. Ensure the destination fulfils the promise and required consent and withdrawal are available.
  4. Define events, duplicates, cancellations, processing deadlines and spending limits.
  5. Include production, placement, fees and handling; separate intermediate metrics from outcomes.
  6. Keep permitted placement evidence and investigate disputed signals without public accusations.

For demand research, read the Wordstat guide; for indexing, see Yandex Webmaster. These are research and verification tools, not additional audience sources.

Next, create an AffiliateCore publisher profile and compare one prepared route with an available offer. If no suitable offer exists, retain your research. Registration does not guarantee traffic or income.

Using this map further

Dedicated guides will cover each route: SEO, paid search, networks, social platforms, Telegram, video, classifieds, maps, creators, directories, email, push, pop, native and incentive programmes. Each requires example materials, an eligible test sequence, economics, quality criteria and limitations. Analyses of deceptive practices explain recognition and protection.

VK, Dzen and Avito public help pages could not be fully read during this review. This map therefore describes selection and assessment principles without verifying their current interface controls, prices or affiliate-placement eligibility. Confirm those details before spending; an unverified route should be excluded from the first test. Translating an article does not establish compatibility between an international platform and the Russian market.
